Two Years Old -- Birthday Party!

James and Hallie had a wonderful birthday! They woke up and had smoothies for breakfast, James got a haircut, and they got to open a present before lunch. Then, after some macaroni and cheese and a great nap, it was party time.

We had about a dozen friends join us for a bounce house and ice cream birthday party at Razzleberry. We blew up our bounce house in the restaurant and set up an awesome sundae bar. The kids loved it and played and ran around for nearly 2.5 hours. My friend, Susanne, made the birthday cakes (cupcakes in ice cream cones) and the kids loved them.

It really was a great second birthday!

Two years old.

Tomorrow Hallie and James turn two years old. That means two years ago today I took Ruby to a friend's house to spend the weekend. Jason and I went out for one last night out before the babies were born, and he went back to work to finish a few things up while I got a massage.

I carried twins to 39 weeks and had 13 pounds, 2 ounces of babies in me. It is crazy to think about how much our life has changed in two years. At, 3 and a half years old, Ruby has grown up into the "big kid" in the house. And we've added baby Clara to the mix!

James went from this colicky baby who screamed for hours a day to a sweet loving big brother. He sleeps hard and plays hard. If there is a way to climb something, he will find it. At two years old, he sleeps in a "baby cage" (aka crib tent) because he can climb out of bed and up his dresser to play with the lights. When he's angry or excited, every muscle in his body tenses and he shakes. At two years old, he can identify all of his letters and sing his alphabet. He loves animals and trains, especially "Thomas," "Percy," "Toby," and of course, "James." He can be a little bully to his sisters and tries to get his way by force. Most of the time this works, but he is also becoming an expert at sitting in time out. He is also one of the most loving kids and always has a hug and a kiss to give. James is my first and only boy and is one minute older than Hallie.

Hallie was always a really passive, quiet baby. While James cried all the time, she was willing to just sit in her swing and watch the world or sleep. She is still my quiet child and is very soft spoken, but she knows how to raise her voice when she really wants something. And, she is still so passive. If James takes something from her, she will whine "Buddy took it" but won't grab it back. When he does give it back, she's quick to say "thank you." For awhile, I thought she was going to have speech issues, but boy is she a talker. She likes to tell everyone what belongs to them (mommy's desk, Hallie's diaper, Ruby's doll, etc.). Hallie loves to have her hair done, even though she doesn't have much. And she loves to dance and sing. She looks up to her big sister and always wants to wear the same outfits and do exactly what Ruby is doing.

James and Hallie shared a crib for quite awhile, but I remember when they stopped. I put them down for a nap when they were about three months old. A while into their nap (but before they should have woken up), I heard a scream from their room. I went running in, thinking something was wrong. I couldn't have anticipated the problem ... James had broken out of his swaddle, rolled onto his side, and was sucking on Hallie's cheek. It was adorable and hilarious.

To this day, they seem inseparable. They love to be together and are concerned if they have to go somewhere without the other one. Having twins has been one of the most difficult things we have experienced as parents -- but while they are definitely "double trouble" some days. Most days it's "double the pleasure, double the fun."

Happy Birthday, James and Hallie!

Sick Baby -- a Clara update

It has been a really long week in our house. Clara woke up in the middle of the night Monday night/Tuesday morning and was running a fever. I didn't want to call the doctor's office at 3 a.m. because I knew they would send us to the hospital. So, I waited until 5 a.m. and called the nurse ...

At 8 a.m. we were at the doctor's office and Clara was still running a fever. The nurse's placed a catheter to check her urine and the doctor came in to check Clara out. Her ears looked good, her chest was clear, no runny nose, no cough -- but she was miserable. So, he decided that he needed to do a blood draw, and a spinal tap (because she hadn't had her two month vaccinations yet).

There is a room in the back of the doctor's office that no patient or parent wants to visit. The procedure room. This is where the nurse holds your baby on her side and curls her into a ball so that the doctor can shove a giant needle into her spine. It sucked. And Clara cried ... all day, she cried.

Some parts of her blood tests were elevated, showing she was definitely fighting something off. And Wednesday morning we were back at the doctor's office to get a second round of antibiotic shots. She was still crying. Because of the relentless sobbing, and the fact that she had blood in her spinal fluid, the doctor wanted us to go to Children's Hospital and get a ct scan to make sure there wasn't something more going on. Thankfully, that scan was normal.

The end result is that the doctor believes she had some form of virus that caused the infection to move to her spinal fluid. So, it was a pretty crappy week as far as Clara has been concerned.

She is much, much better now and I have some great pictures to show you! I finally even caught her smile!!!

Gymnastics

Hallie and James go to "school" on Tuesdays and Thursdays, so I've been watching one of Ruby's friends (Lea Ann) while her mom works. This means I get to do fun "big kid" stuff with the older girls. Last Thursday we decided to go to Tataru's, a gymnastics place in Knoxville. They have an open gym every morning for $5/kid. We met up with their friend Zyah, and the girls had a ton of fun running, jumping and flying through the equipment. We went to Double Dogs for lunch and the kids were thrilled to eat out of dog bowls ...

Snow Day!

Last night the kids had a lot of fun playing "cheese" with the camera. They also enjoyed getting their picture taken with Clara. This morning we woke up to a winter wonderland (ok, we had a dusting of snow ..) Schools were canceled, so our friend Lea Ann came over for a play date because her mom still had to go to work. They played outside for about a half hour before it was just too cold for them.

Is it really 2012???

Wow, time has been flying by so fast. I cannot believe it is already 2012.

Clara is getting big! She has her 2 month check up next Thursday, but I think she's over 14 pounds already. She seems to think that she gets to be pickier than all of the other kids -- I really can't eat any dairy and nurse her because she screams and breaks out in major baby acne and has horrible gas. But, she's also really cute, so I put up with it. I have been trying to catch her smile for a couple of weeks now, but it still eludes the camera.

Ruby, James & Hallie are all enjoying their Christmas gifts. Ruby and Hallie love dressing up and James is madly in love with his trains. Each night before bed we have a family "dance party." This usually ends with all of the living room blankets and couch cushions on the ground being jumped on, thrown and used to build forts. It really is a fun time!

I'm going to try to get more pictures taken this year. I've realized we're slacking on taking pictures of Clara as she gets older ... I guess that's what happens when you have four kids!

Merry Christmas (belated of course)!
